Learn How To Play Jazz Drums
So you have decided that you want to be a drummer but is at a loss as to which genre of playing style you want to master. Have you considered learning how to be a jazz drummer?

Playing jazz music gives the drummer the opportunity to exhibit his amazing technical drumming skills and capabilities. However, most drummers choose not to take the time to learn how to play jazz drums properly which is partly due to its wide range of technicalities unlike most other forms of music.
Although jazz drumming seem to look very complicated, in reality, it is not that difficult to learn. The main difference is that most drummers are used to the 4/4 tempo of drumming where jazz is played with plenty of triplets and has a different feel from most other types of music. So the drummer may have to relearn some drumming techniques. Furthermore, most jazz pieces are relatively fast in tempo and thus most drummers also need to make improvements on their stick speed.
The first thing a new drummer needs to learn when playing jazz pieces is the basic jazz swing tempo or sometimes called the “swing groove”. A jazz drummer’s main role is to keep time for the rest of the band just like in any genre of music. The drummer should never overpower the rest of the band unlike when playing rock songs. To do this, simply use your hi hat and ride cymbal.
Ok. Let’s start with your hi-hat stepping on the 2 and 4 count to a piece of swing music. It is critical to keep this count over top of everything else that you play. Next, add ride the cymbal with a triplet tempo and feel. Practice these moves to perfection before going further with your drum lessons.
Now that you have mastered how to keep the swing tempo with the hi-hat and ride cymbal, let’s move on to the bass drum or sometimes called the kick-drum. Jazz drumming techniques are sometimes very subtle and because of this, the bass drum should not be too dominant. So do make sure that you do not play the bass drum too loudly. This again is unlike most other form of drumming. A good technique for this is keep your heel down when playing the bass drum. In this way, you are more in position control the strength of the kick more easily. A technique jazz drummers often use is the feathering the bass drum. This is done by lightly tapping the bass drum on the quarter or eighth notes.
You will probably know that is highly common for the bass drum to follow the bass guitar player. So you may need to know what kind of rhythm progression the bass player is playing and try to follow him. The bass drum should be played with more of a feel rather than powerful thumping like those in rock music.

The Drum Line: The Bad Boys Of Halftime
When I was in high school, I was on the dance team and during football season, we worked with the band for the halftime show. I remember there was a running joke about the drum line, the upshot of which was that if you did not get out of their way, they would run you over, and you would have no one to blame but yourself. In the world of show bands and football halftime entertainment, the members of the drum line are the bad asses, the bad boys, the ones with the attitudes. Heck, drum line performers have such a reputation, there was even a movie made about them. “Drumline,” made in 2002, presented a band director who recruited a Harlem street drummer to play at a Southern university-Harlem. Think about it. If you saw a bunch of drum-toting, regimented-looking people coming toward you like a freight train, wouldn’t you move?
Drum lines play a crucial role in halftime show performances. They are, after all, the percussion, the beat by which the entire band measures its music. Show bands can be big, sometimes as many as 500 people. In order to control that many musicians, the performers of the drum line have to be strong artists. The drum line can actually be divided into two sections: the battery, which moves around the field, and the pit, which is stationary at the front of the field. Because the battery is the portion that most people associate with the words “drum line,” that is portion I will deal with in this article.
Drum lines are generally comprised of three different types of drum: the snare drum, the tenor drum, and the bass drum. The number of each instrument depends simply on the size of the band and the sensibilities of the director. The first instrument, the snare, provides the center rhythm of the rum line. These drums are typically played in unison, possess high tension heads, and form center of tempo for the battery. Next on the list is the tenor drum, which actually comes in mounted sets of four to six. Thanks to their varied sizes and tuning, tenor drums add pitch variety to a drum line. Number three, the bass drum, differs from its smaller cousins in that rather than being played in unison, each instrument is assigned a unique part. These drums produce the deepest sounds in the battery and are the largest on the field.
There is one more instrument usually found in the drum line, and this is they cymbals. Although not a drum, it is perhaps the most dramatic member of the battery. Cymbals are typically pairs of crash cymbals and can be played in a variety of ways, in unison, as split parts, or like hi-hats. In addition to being played, they are sometimes spun and twirled for visual effect.

Bongo Drums And Latin Culture
Bongo drums, usually just called bongos, are one of the most recognizable of percussion instruments. Due to the pervasive popularity of Latin music (thank you, “Dancing With the Stars”), the sounds of these little drums are familiar to people around the world. Bongos, as the name implies, always come in attached sets of two. One drum is slightly bigger than the other; the larger is the “hembra” (the Spanish word for “female), while the smaller is the “macho” (the Spanish word for “male”). Bongo drums are capable of a great deal of versatility and their music is usually upbeat and rapid.
Like some other drums of the Americas, such as the steel drum, bongo drums were originally brought to South America from Africa via the Atlantic slave trade. The African nations of Nigeria and Cameroon had fraternal organizations that utilized a trio of drums called “bonko.” When the Africans were brought to the Americas, vestiges of these organizations and their traditions came with them. The Abakua is a society of Afro-Cuban men that evolved from those fraternal organizations. It continued to use the bonko drums, but the instruments eventually spread beyond the fraternity. It is believed that this was the origin of the bongo in South America. The Abakua still exists in modern Cuba and it still uses bonkos that, if joined together in pairs, very closely resemble bongo drums.
The bodies of bongo drums are usually made of wood, metal or composite materials attached by a thick piece of wood. The head is traditionally of animal skin, but as with other modern drums, synthetic materials are commonly used in modern times. Originally, in the late 19th century, the heads of bongo drums were tacked on and tuned with a heat source. But since the 1940s, metal tuning lugs have been used to allow for easier tuning.
The sound of the bongo drums is high-pitched and as mentioned, the tempo is generally fast. When played, the drums should be held between the player’s knees; the larger drum should be on the side of the player’s dominant hand, which is usually the right one. The drum heads are struck with both the fingers, palms, and sometimes sticks and brushes, although these last are contemporary innovations. The sound of the bongo drum can be muted by placing part of one hand on the drum head while striking with the other hand.
Some of the most famous dance styles of Latin America, including the mambo, salsa and conga, utilize the music of the bongo drum. The instrument’s capacity for distinct percussion is essential to these styles, which showcase distinct and often rapid rhythms. In fact, the music of the bongos is often used as a solo instrument in such music, a tactic that highlights the importance of a song’s rhythm.
On a side note, although bongo drums are generally considered instruments of Latin America, drums resembling bongos can be found in Morocco, Egypt and some Middle Eastern countries. These drums have rawhide heads like their American counterparts, but the bodies are of a ceramic nature. Such drums can also be heard in some traditional Spanish music, such as flamenco, probably due to the Moorish influence in that country.
